Game 1: Wright State 10, NC State 8 [Box Score]
After giving up four runs in the top of the seventh inning, No. 8 NC State dropped its series opener against Wright State Friday evening at Doak Field at Dail Park, 10-8.
Austin Staley (0-1, 9.00 ERA) picked up the loss after surrendering two earned runs in 1-1/3 innings on the mound. Staley entered the game for starter Ryan Williamson. Williamson left after giving up four earned runs in four innings despite striking out six Raiders.
The Shepard siblings shone the brightest in the Wolfpack’s loss. Chance and Shane Shepard combined to go 5-for-8 at the plate with two home runs, two doubles, four RBI, and three runs. The Shepard brothers became the first pair of NC State brothers to hit four-baggers in the same game since Brian and Robbie Bark accomplished the feat on March 27, 1990 against Davidson.
Preston Palmeiro added to the home run parade with his third of the season. He finished the game 2-for-5 at the plate with two RBI.
Game 2: NC State 6, Wright State 1 [Box Score]
State rebounded from the Friday loss and powered its way to a win to tie the series versus Wright State on Saturday, 6-1.
Brian Brown (1-0, 2.84 ERA) picked up his first win of the season after surrendering an unearned run in five innings while striking out five and walking two. Cody Beckman and Kyle Smith pitched the final four innings, combining for five strikeouts and one walk.
Chance Shepard went 2-for-4 at the plate with another home run and two RBI. Evan Mendoza, a right-handed pitcher starting at third base, finished 3-for-4 with a run and an RBI after entering the game with a career batting average of .000.
After taking the 2-1 lead in the bottom of the third inning, the Pack widened in the bottom of the sixth. Joe Dunand led off with a double and advanced to third two batters later on a 0ne-out single by Xavier LeGrant. Mendoza followed with an RBI single down the right field line, plating Dunand. Brock Deatherage reached on a fielding error, scoring LeGrant from third. Josh McLain plated Mendoza and Deatherage with a two-run double into left-field.
Game 3: NC State 8, Wright State 4 [Box Score]
The Pack wrapped up the weekend series against the Raiders with a win Sunday afternoon, 8-4.
Joe O’Donnell (1-0, 3.52 ERA) earned his first win on the season after striking out a career-high seven batters while only giving up two earned runs and one walk in five innings on the mound. Sean Adler, Will Gilbert, and Tommy DeJuneas pitched the final four innings, combining for two runs, two walks, and seven strikeouts, including four Ks for Gilbert.
Chance Shepard finished the weekend with his third home run in three games. Chance leads the team in homers with three on the season and went 1-for-5 with three RBI at the plate on Sunday.
After tying the score at one apiece in the bottom of the first, State took the lead for good in the bottom of the third with four runs in the frame. Deatherage knocked a one-out single up the middle, then advanced to second on a wild pitch. Palmeiro plated Deatherage with an RBI single, followed by a single from Andrew Knizner. With runners on first and second, Chance Shepard stepped to the plate and launched a 1-1 pitch over the wall in left field.
NC State will return to action on Tuesday at Doak Field at Dail Park against UNC Greensboro. First pitch is slated for 4 pm.
