Evan Edwards homers twice as the Wolfpack moves on to face Auburn in the Raleigh Regional
After defeating Northeastern Saturday afternoon, NC State (42-17) evaded elimination yet again as the Wolfpack avenged its Friday loss against Army (37-24) with a dominant win Sunday afternoon at Doak Field, 11-1.
Graduate student right-handed pitcher Johnny Piedmonte got the call to start, but despite pitching a no-hitter through four innings, the Davidson, N.C. product left with apparent back stiffness. Piedmonte struck out two Black Knights and walked two before leaving the game to a standing ovation from the NC State faithful.
Sophomore left-hander Kent Klyman (8-2, 2.34 ERA) picked up where Piedmonte left off and earned the win after 2-1/3 innings of two-hit pitching. Klyman was charged with an unearned run before redshirt junior righty Nolan Clenney hurled the final 2-2/3 innings.
The Pack hopped on the scoreboard early with a run in the top of the first inning. Senior center fielder Josh McLain reached on a bean ball. After stealing second base and moving to third on a groundout, McLain scored on a sacrifice fly by sophomore shortstop Will Wilson.
Two more runs came in to score for NC State in the top of the sixth inning. Wilson reached base on an Army error to lead off the frame. The Kings Mountain, N.C. native advanced to second on a wild pitch and moved to third on a flyout before junior first baseman Evan Edwards drilled a two-run home run over the wall in left field.
The State lead got a huge boost in the seventh as five runs came across to score in the inning. Freshman second baseman J.T. Jarrett led off the frame with a single before McLain tripled to bring him home.
Junior left fielder Brett Kinneman singled to drive McLain in. After stealing second and moving to third on a flyout, Kinneman scored on a single by senior right fielder Brock Deatherage. After a passed ball moved Deatherage to second, senior third baseman Stephen Pitarra drove him in with an RBI double.
NC State tacked on two more runs in the eighth inning. McLain reached on a one-out single before Wilson drilled a two-run homer two batters later for his 15th home run of the year. Edwards added the last insurance run one inning later with his second four-bagger of the game, bringing his season total to 15.
With the win, the Wolfpack advances to face Auburn at 7 p.m Sunday evening. Should NC State take the win, the final game will take place Monday at 7 p.m.
