The Wolfpack downs winless Kent State in extra innings to kick off Baseball at the Beach.
The 2019 Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach tournament began Friday afternoon with NC State (5-0) winning its first game of the weekend with an extra-inning win over Kent State (0-4) at TicketReturn.Com Field, 3-2.
Junior left-handed pitcher Kent Klyman (2-0, 4.91 ERA) picked up the win after pitching the final 1-1/3 innings. Junior right-hander Jason Parker and sophomore left-hander Evan Justice each threw four innings with Parker, the Wolfpack’s starting pitcher, allowing two unearned runs. Redshirt sophomore righty Dalton Feeney pitched 1-2/3 innings between Justice’s and Klyman’s tenures.
The Golden Flashes plated both its runs in the top of the third inning. It would take State six innings before tacking a run on the scoreboard. Sophomore right fielder Devonte Brown led off the bottom of the sixth with a double before scoring two batters later on a single by junior shortstop Will Wilson.
Wilson kept up the heroics in the eighth inning with his game-tying home run to lead off the inning, his third homer of the season. The Pack was held in check for the next two innings despite loading the bases with one out in the 10th.
NC State claimed its fifth win of the year on what transpired in the bottom of the 11th inning. Junior outfielder Lawson McArthur, entering the game as a pinch-hitter, drew a one-out walk and made it into scoring position on an errant pickoff attempt. Three batters later, sophomore catcher Patrick Bailey hit a high, two-out pop-fly in foul territory. However, the ball carried back into fair territory inside the left-field line and dropped to the grass after McArthur crossed the plate, giving the Pack the victory.
The Wolfpack will return to action Saturday in Conway, S.C. when NC State takes on Michigan State at Springs Brooks Stadium on the campus of Coastal Carolina University. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m.
