Powered by a seventh-inning rally, NC State downs Michigan State on a five-hit shutout.
CONWAY, S.C. — The 2019 Brittain Resorts Baseball at the Beach tournament continued Saturday afternoon as No. 21 NC State (6-0) continued its perfect season with a shutout victory over Michigan State (1-5) at Springs Brooks Stadium, 5-0.
After sophomore left-handed pitcher Canaan Silver gave three hits and two walks in the first 3-1/3 innings with three strikeouts, sophomore right-hander Reid Johnston (1-0, 0.00 ERA) picked up the win for the Wolfpack with seven strikeouts and only two hits allowed in 4-2/3 innings. Junior righty Andrew Blake pitched a clean ninth to end the game, striking out one Spartan batter.
Playing as the visiting team, NC State was held to only three hits in the first six innings. However, once Mike Mokma, the Spartans’ starting pitcher, left the game, the Pack scored four runs in the top of the seventh to take the lead.
Freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough led off with a single up the middle. Entering the game as a pinch-hitter, redshirt freshman right fielder Thayer Thomas followed with a double down the left-field line. McDonough scored the Pack’s first run on a wild pitch.
Two batters after Thomas’ double, sophomore second baseman J.T. Jarrett, also making his first at-bat of the game as a pinch-hitter, capitalized on a 1-2 pitch with an RBI double for his first career extra-base hit. After plating Thomas on the two-bagger, Jarrett scored on an RBI single by sophomore left fielder Jonny Butler. Senior first baseman Evan Edwards drove Butler home with a double to left-center.
The Pack’s final run came in the top of the ninth inning. Butler drew a one-out walk and advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Junior shortstop Will Wilson then singled to bring Butler home.
The Wolfpack will next face No. 19 Coastal Carolina to conclude the weekend’s games in Conway. First pitch from Springs Brooks Stadium is set for 3 p.m.
