The Wolfpack coasts to victory on the road against Campbell off of two early-inning home runs.
BUIES CREEK, N.C. — No. 10 NC State (8-0) wrapped up its five-game stretch away from home with a definitive win over Campbell (5-3) at Jim Perry Stadium Wednesday afternoon, 10-1.
Junior right-handed pitcher Alec Barger got the call to start and surrendered the lone Camel run in 2-2/3 innings of work. The former Polk State CC pitcher struck out four Campbell batters while allowing two hits and two walks in his tenure.
Following an inning of work from sophomore left-hander Evan Justice, sophomore righty Reid Johnston (2-0, 0.00 ERA) picked up the win after hurling three shutout innings, striking out four Camels in the process. The Wolfpack’s pitching committee that included sophomore southpaw David Harrison, junior right-hander Michael Bienlien and redshirt freshman righty Cameron Cotter finished the final 2-1/3 frames with Bienlien pitching a three-strikeout eighth.
Sophomore right fielder Terrell Tatum got the Wolfpack on the board in the top of the second inning. Freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough reached base on a one-out single before freshman third baseman Vojtech Mensik walked two batters later. Tatum followed the walk with a three-run home run, the first collegiate bomb for the Collierville, Tenn. native. Senior first baseman Evan Edwards followed Tatum’s lead one inning later as the Greensboro product launched his fourth home run of the season over the wall in right field in the top of the third.
The Camels responded to Edwards’ bomb with its only run of the game in the bottom of the third. Both teams were held in check until the Pack tacked on a run in the sixth inning. Edwards and sophomore catcher Patrick Bailey reached on back-to-back walks before McDonough bunted his away aboard with a single to load the bases. Junior designated hitter Brad Debo then flew out to left field, allowing Edwards to score on a sacrifice fly.
The Pack brought three more runners in to score in the top of the seventh. Freshman left fielder Jonny Butler got beaned to start the inning, and junior shortstop Will Wilson followed with an infield single. Edwards then reached on a fielding error, loading the bases. Bailey then hit a chopper to third. With the throw going home, Bailey reached first on the fielder’s choice, but a Campbell throwing error allowed both Butler and Wilson to score as Edwards moved to third. Debo then recorded his second sacrifice fly of the game, this time to right field, that plated Edwards yet again.
The final NC State runs came in the ninth as the Pack scored twice. Edwards and Bailey led off with a walk and a single respectively. McDonough then reached on an RBI single to right-center, allowing Edwards to score his fourth run of the game. Debo followed McDonough’s base hit with an RBI single of his own, bringing Bailey home.
The Wolfpack returns home for a three-game series against Minnesota starting Friday at 3 p.m.
