Bouncing back from its first loss of the season, the Wolfpack dominates in its midweek matchup against Towson.
No. 1 NC State (20-1, 5-1 ACC) picked up where it had left off after taking two of three from Florida State, defeating Towson (3-14) Tuesday evening at Doak Field, 11-1.
Junior right-handed pitcher Mathieu Gauthier started on the mound, but left after giving up three hits and a walk while only recording two outs. Redshirt senior right-hander Nolan Clenney (1-0, 1.29 ERA) succeeded Gauthier to pick up the win after giving up the lone Tiger run on four hits and two walks in 3-1/3 innings, striking out six batters in the process.
Sophomore southpaws David Harrison and Canaan Silver followed with two innings each before freshman righty Andrew Tillery pitched the final inning of the game. Harrison struck out three batters while Silver retired two on strikes.
The Wolfpack opened up scoring with three runs in the first inning. Sophomore left fielder Jonny Butler led off by drawing a full-count walk. Junior shortstop Will Wilson followed with a single. Sophomore designated hitter Patrick Bailey then plated Butler with a double down the right-field line. Senior first baseman Evan Edwards flew out to center afterward, allowing Wilson to score on the sacrifice fly. Freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough then singled to bring Bailey home.
State followed the three-run first inning with runs in the second and third. After a single and a double play to start the second inning, Butler singled and then scored on a double by Wilson. After a fly-out to end the second, Edwards led off the third with a solo home run for his sixth bomb of the season.
After getting held scoreless over the next two innings, the Pack brought two more runs in to score in the sixth. Freshman third baseman Vojtech Mensik reached on a one-out walk before stealing second for his sixth stolen base of the year. After moving to third on a wild pitch, Mensik scored on a Butler single. After a wild pitch moved Butler to second, Wilson reached on a fielder’s choice with Butler staying put. Bailey then walked to load the bases for Edwards who drove Butler home with a sacrifice fly.
NC State’s final runs came in the seventh with the Pack bringing four runners home. Sophomore infielder Devonte Brown reached on a one-out, pinch-hit single, moving to second on a throwing error. Sophomore second baseman David Vazquez drew a walk afterward. Two batters later, Butler singled to bring Brown home. Wilson then drilled the first pitch he saw over the wall in left-center for a three-run homer, his fifth four-bagger of the season.
The Wolfpack returns to action this weekend in Coral Gables, Fla. as Miami hosts NC State for a three-game series starting Friday. First pitch from Alex Rodriguez Park at Mark Light Field is set for 7 p.m.
