A two-run Chanticleer home run in the top of the ninth propels visiting Coastal Carolina past NC State.
Avenging its loss to No. 2 NC State (29-5, 12-3 ACC) back on Feb. 24, No. 24 Coastal Carolina (22-11-1, 8-4 Sun Belt) came to Doak Field and rallied in the ninth inning to defeat the Wolfpack, 7-6.
With State ahead by a run in the top of the ninth, Chanticleer center fielder Parker Chavers hit a two-run home run off of junior left-handed pitcher Kent Klyman (5-1, 5.06 ERA) to secure the win for Coastal. Matt Eardensohn struck out the side in the home half of the ninth, silencing the Pack offense.
Redshirt sophomore right-hander Dalton Feeney started on the mound but got pulled after giving up a solo home run and a double while recording just two outs. Sophomore southpaw David Harrison followed with 1-1/3 innings in which he allowed another Coastal run on two hits.
After redshirt senior righty Nolan Clenney relieved Harrison to record two outs, sophomore lefty Evan Justice and junior righty Andrew Blake pitched an inning each with both giving up a run. Junior right-hander Michael Bienlien followed with 1-1/3 innings, allowing a run.
Freshman right-hander Cameron Cotter pitched 2-1/3 innings of relatively clean baseball, only allowing a hit until the ninth inning where he gave up a walk before getting pulled in favor of Klyman. Cotter was charged for the tying run while Klyman earned the loss for allowing the go-ahead homer. Freshman righty Baker Nelson retired the final two Coastal batters that would come to bat.
With the Chanticleers already up a run, the Wolfpack tied the game in the bottom of the first. Sophomore right fielder Jonny Butler led off with a walk. Two batters later, sophomore catcher Patrick Bailey walked. After a pop-out, freshman center fielder Tyler McDonough drew a bases-loading walk. Freshman left fielder Luca Tresh was then beaned, driving Butler home.
Coastal Carolina pushed another run across in the top of the third. NC State answered with two runs in the home half of the frame. Bailey led off with his seventh home run of the season. Senior first baseman Evan Edwards followed with a walk. After a McDonough single, Tresh walked to load the bases. Junior designated hitter Brad Debo then flew out to allow Edwards to score on the sacrifice fly.
The Chants tied the game in the fourth then took the lead in the fifth, but the Pack tied the game back up with a run in the bottom of the fifth. Tresh led off with a double. After moving to third on a Debo single, Tresh scored on a double-play ball.
After Coastal took the lead by a run in the top of the sixth, the Pack pushed two more runners across in the State half of the sixth. Bailey reached on a two-out single to set up Edwards to drill his 10th home run of the season over the wall in center field. The Pack maintained the advantage until Chavers’ bomb in the ninth.
The Wolfpack returns to action Friday evening as Louisville comes to Raleigh for a three-game series. Frist pitch from Doak Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
