The Wolfpack shuts out UNCW to remain undefeated on the season.
No. 8 NC State (8-0) continued its hot start to the 2020 season with a dominant shutout victory over UNCW (6-3) Tuesday afternoon at Doak Field, 11-0.
Junior left-handed pitcher David Harrison got the call to start for the Wolfpack before getting pulled after 4-2/3 innings of work. The Rocky Mount, N.C. native struck out six Seahawk batters while allowing three hits and two walks before leaving in favor of junior left-hander Canaan Silver who pitched just 2/3 inning.
Freshman right-handed pitcher Matt Willadsen (1-0, 5.40 ERA) picked up the win after relieving Silver, striking out two batters in his 1-2/3 innings of work. Redshirt junior righty Logan Bender and sophomore right-hander Andrew Tillery followed with one inning each on the bump.
Junior third baseman Devonte Brown got the Wolfpack’s scoring started in the first inning by clobbering a three-run home run over the wall in left-center field. Sophomore second baseman Tyler McDonough and junior catcher Patrick Bailey both scored after the pair reached base with a single and a double respectively.
State tacked on another run in the fourth inning. Freshman shortstop Jose Torres led off with a walk. Two batters later, McDonough singled to drive Torres home.
The Pack bolstered its score in the fifth inning by pushing three runs across home plate. Junior left fielder Terrell Tatum reached with a one-out single before moving into scoring position by stealing second. Senior right fielder Lawson McArthur plated Tatum with a single through the right side before coming home on a two-run homer by sophomore Luca Tresh.
Two more runs came across in the bottom of the sixth for the Wolfpack. Bailey reached base on a one-out double. Brown followed with a walk. Junior center fielder Jonny Butler then brought both runners home with a double down the right-field line.
The final NC State runs came in the seventh and eighth innings. Tresh singled to lead off the seventh before coming home on a McDonough double three batters later. In the eighth, sophomore Marek Chlup hit a one-out, pinch-hit double, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a single by junior David Vazquez.
The Wolfpack will next travel to U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minn. for the 2020 CambriaCollegeClassic. NC State will first face Iowa on Friday, Feb. 28 at 12 p.m. EST before facing Purdue the next day at the same time. The Pack will conclude its weekend with a Sunday-night matchup with Minnesota at 7 p.m. EST.
