ELON, N.C. — NC State (10-6, 0-2 ACC) snapped its two-game losing streak with a road victory over Elon (9-7) Tuesday afternoon at Latham Park, 2-1.
Redshirt sophomore right-handed pitcher Logan Whitaker started on the mound for the Wolfpack and kept the Phoenix hitless in his 4-2/3 innings on the mound, striking out five and walking two before getting the hook. Junior right-hander Baker Nelson (1-0, 5.40 ERA) picked up where Whitaker left off and earned the win after 1-1/3 innings of shutout pitching despite surrendering two hits.
Senior left-hander Canaan Silver and sophomore right-hander Garrett Payne each followed with an inning of relief with Silver striking out two batters while Payne added one strikeout. Sophomore southpaw Chris Villaman came in the game to pitch in the ninth inning and, despite yielding one unearned run on two hits, struck out one batter and induced a game-ending double play to pick up his first save of the season.
Both of NC State’s runs came in the top of the second inning. Senior center fielder Devonte Brown reached on a one-out bunt single. Freshman right fielder Will Marcy followed with a bunt single of his own with Brown racing to third on the play. Sophomore left fielder Dominic Pilolli drove Brown home with a sacrifice fly to left field before freshman shortstop Payton Green plated Marcy with a single down the right-field line.
The Wolfpack returns to action Wednesday, March 16 as Coastal Carolina travels to Raleigh. First pitch from Doak Field is set for 7 p.m.
