RALEIGH, N.C. — After a lengthy Sunday doubleheader at Florida State, NC State (12-8, 1-4 ACC) returned home for a midweek matchup versus North Carolina A&T (9-11), holding on to get the win Tuesday evening at Doak Field, 5-3.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Garrett Payne (2-0, 3.32 ERA) started on the mound for the Wolfpack and picked up the win despite surrendering all three of the Aggies’ runs in his 5-1/3 innings of work. Senior left-hander Canaan Silver hurled 3-2/3 innings of shutout baseball, including a gutsy performance in the ninth inning when A&T put the tying run on base, to pick up his first save of the season.

Sophomore first baseman LuJames Groover, III put the Pack on the board immediately with a leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning, his second of the season. Two innings later, redshirt junior shortstop Josh Hood brought three runs home with one swing of the bat. Freshman catcher Jacob Cozart drew a leadoff walk to start the third inning. Two batters later, freshman designated hitter Tommy White doubled off the wall in right-center field, moving Cozart to third. After taking a pair of pitches outside the strike zone, Hood blasted his fifth homer of the season over the wall in left field.

State brought its final run home in the bottom of the fourth. Freshman right fielder Will Marcy led off with a double before getting replaced on the base paths by sophomore Noah Soles. Senior second baseman J.T. Jarrett got hit by a pitch before getting forced out on a fielder’s choice hit by freshman third baseman Payton Green. After moving to third on Green’s fielder’s choice, Soles stole home plate as Green swiped second base.

The Wolfpack returns to action Friday, March 25 as No. 12 Georgia Tech comes to Raleigh for a three-game series. First pitch from Doak Field is set for 6:30 p.m.
