GREENVILLE, N.C. — Bolstered by dominant pitching, NC State (16-8, 4-4 ACC) traveled to East Carolina (18-14, 2-1 American) and picked up a tough shutout win at Clark-LeClair Stadium Tuesday evening, 2-0.

Sophomore right-handed pitcher Garrett Payne (3-0, 2.78 ERA) started on the mound for the Wolfpack and struck out two while allowing two hits in 2-2/3 innings en route to the win. Senior left-hander Canaan Silver followed with 3-1/3 innings in relief, allowing just one hit and one walk with one strikeout. Junior righty Baker Nelson succeeded Silver with two frames of no-hit pitching before sophomore southpaw Chris Villaman picked up his fourth save of the year with a 1-2-3 ninth inning.

The Pack struck early with one run scored in the top of the second inning. Sophomore left fielder Dominic Pilolli led off with a double down the right-field line before moving to third on a wild pitch. Senior second baseman J.T. Jarrett then drove Pilolli home with a sacrifice bunt.

Jarrett plated State’s final run in the top of the fourth. Freshman designated hitter Tommy White and Pilolli led off with back-to-back singles before the Greensboro, N.C. native lined a pitch into left-center field to bring White home.

The Wolfpack returns to action Friday, April 1 as the team travels to Clemson to take on the Tigers. First pitch from Doug Kingsmore Stadium is set from 6 p.m.
